Brief Bio:

I grew up in the Midwest and remained there through my undergraduate education. Upon graduation, I married and moved to Roanoke, Virginia – a beautiful little city on the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian Trail in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

After six years of work and two years of graduate school, I relocated to Denver, CO. Our time in the Mile High City yielded much enterprise software development, a few kids, and several marathons. I love Colorado and it was the inspiration for this site (coloradoresearch.com). But, the westward trend continued and I soon found myself in the Portland, OR area.

While in the Pacific Northwest, my work focused on leading the roll out of enterprise architecture and service-oriented architecture at a medium sized public company. In fact, almost all of my software development experience has been in service-oriented environments (even before SOA was popular.)

Most of the last 12 years have been spent working in Enterprise Java environments. I love Java. I’ve also spent some time working with C, C++, and Objective-C for iOS professionally.  Recent developments in Big Data and Machine Learning have also involved Scala and Python.

In recent years, I have devoted much time to the non-technical aspects of software team performance.  Clear communication, vision, strengths-based management, and  personal effectiveness do more to impact a team’s ability to deliver software than the mechanics of software process.

I’ve held developer, manager, architecture, and even sales positions with large and small companies. You might know of some of them – Trane, Lucent (now Avaya), Corporate Express, Mentor Graphics, and a few startups.  I have a BS in Industrial Engineering from Iowa State and an MS in Computer Science from Virginia Tech.
